Privacy Policy

Last updated: August 29, 2026

1. Scope of this Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how personal data may be processed when you visit the LocalKeyRemapper website available at https://localkeyremapper.github.io or interact with the LocalKeyRemapper project.

The LocalKeyRemapper macOS application and the project website have different privacy characteristics and are therefore described separately below.

2. LocalKeyRemapper macOS application

LocalKeyRemapper is designed to operate locally on your Mac.

The application does not require an account and does not include analytics or telemetry.

Remapping profiles, rules, shortcuts and application settings are processed locally and are not transmitted to LocalKeyRemapper servers.

The project does not operate a remote service for storing or processing LocalKeyRemapper configuration data.

3. Website operation

The LocalKeyRemapper website is a static website hosted using GitHub Pages.

The website itself does not intentionally include analytics or tracking scripts as part of its source code.

Because the website is hosted by GitHub Pages, GitHub may process technical information necessary to operate, deliver and secure the service.

4. Technical information processed by GitHub

When you access a GitHub Pages website, GitHub may process technical information associated with your request.

Depending on GitHub's systems and policies, this may include information such as:

  • IP address;
  • date and time of the request;
  • requested page or resource;
  • browser and device information;
  • operating system information;
  • referring page or URL;
  • network and request information; and
  • security and diagnostic information.

This processing is performed through GitHub's infrastructure and is governed by GitHub's own privacy documentation.

5. Information voluntarily provided by users

If you contact the LocalKeyRemapper project by email, information contained in your communication may be processed in order to read, review and respond to your message.

This may include your email address, name if provided, the contents of the message and any other information you voluntarily include.

Please avoid sending passwords, private keys, authentication credentials or other sensitive information unless it is strictly necessary.

6. Public GitHub activity

LocalKeyRemapper is an open-source project and uses GitHub for source code hosting, issue tracking, development discussions and project collaboration.

Information submitted through public GitHub issues, pull requests, discussions, comments or other public GitHub features may be visible to anyone.

Users should therefore avoid publishing sensitive personal data, confidential information, passwords, private keys, identification documents or information that they do not wish to make public.

GitHub independently processes information associated with the use of its services according to its own privacy policies and terms.

7. Security reports

Security vulnerabilities should not be disclosed through public GitHub issues.

Security concerns may be reported privately through GitHub's private vulnerability reporting functionality where available.

8. Purposes of processing

Personal data associated with the website or communications with the project may be processed for purposes including:

  • delivering and displaying the website;
  • maintaining the technical operation of the website;
  • protecting the website and related infrastructure;
  • preventing abuse or security threats;
  • responding to questions and communications;
  • reviewing bug reports and feature requests;
  • handling security reports; and
  • complying with applicable legal obligations.

9. Legal bases under European data protection law

Where the General Data Protection Regulation ("GDPR") applies, personal data may be processed on different legal bases depending on the particular activity.

9.1 Legitimate interests

Processing necessary for operating, maintaining, securing and protecting the website may rely on legitimate interests under Article 6(1)(f) GDPR where applicable and where those interests are not overridden by the rights and freedoms of the data subject.

Such interests may include website security, prevention of abuse and maintaining the technical availability of the website.

9.2 Steps requested by the user

Where a user voluntarily contacts the project or asks for a response, processing may be necessary to respond to that request or take steps requested by the user, depending on the circumstances.

9.3 Legal obligations

Personal data may also be processed where necessary to comply with a legal obligation under Article 6(1)(c) GDPR.

10. Cookies and local storage

The LocalKeyRemapper website does not intentionally use non-essential cookies or browser storage for analytics or behavioural tracking as part of its own source code.

Third-party websites reached through external links may use their own cookies, browser storage or similar technologies according to their respective policies.

11. Third-party services

The website contains links to third-party services, including GitHub.

When you follow an external link, the destination service is operated independently and may process information according to its own privacy policy, terms and technical configuration.

LocalKeyRemapper does not control the privacy practices of independently operated third-party websites.

12. GitHub Sponsors

The project may provide links to GitHub Sponsors for users who voluntarily choose to financially support LocalKeyRemapper.

Sponsorship transactions and related account or payment information are handled through GitHub and its applicable payment providers. LocalKeyRemapper does not operate its own payment processing system through this website.

Users who choose to use GitHub Sponsors should review GitHub's applicable privacy and payment information.

13. Recipients

Depending on the activity, personal data may be processed by or disclosed to:

  • GitHub, in connection with website hosting and GitHub services;
  • email service providers where users contact the project by email;
  • service providers necessary for technical or security purposes, where applicable; and
  • public authorities or other entities where disclosure is required by law.

14. International data transfers

Some third-party services used by the project operate internationally.

Personal data may therefore be processed in countries outside the European Economic Area depending on the service involved.

Where European data protection law applies, international transfers must rely on an appropriate legal mechanism where required.

Information concerning international transfers carried out by GitHub or other independent providers can be found in their respective privacy documentation.

15. Data retention

Information directly processed in connection with communications to the LocalKeyRemapper project is retained only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was provided, subject to applicable legal obligations.

GitHub, email providers and other independent service providers determine retention periods for information processed through their own services according to their respective policies and legal obligations.

16. Rights under the GDPR

Where the GDPR applies, data subjects may have the right, subject to the conditions and limitations established by law, to:

  • obtain confirmation as to whether personal data concerning them is being processed;
  • request access to their personal data;
  • request correction of inaccurate personal data;
  • request deletion of personal data;
  • request restriction of processing;
  • object to processing where applicable;
  • receive personal data in a portable format where applicable; and
  • lodge a complaint with the competent supervisory authority.

In Italy, the competent supervisory authority is the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali.

Requests concerning processing independently carried out by GitHub or another third-party provider may need to be submitted directly to that provider.

17. External links

This website may contain links to independently operated third-party websites.

This Privacy Policy does not govern the privacy practices of those external websites.

Users should review the privacy policies of external services before providing personal information to them.

18. Changes to this Policy

This Privacy Policy may be updated when the website, application, project infrastructure, service providers or applicable legal requirements change.

Material changes may be reflected by updating this page and the "Last updated" date shown at the beginning of the Policy.
